Canadian Rocky Mountains

History

Beauty through the ages

Rundle Rock was named by the stonemasons who quarried it from the base of Mount Rundle in the late 19th century. The stonemasons discovered that this visually attractive stone was easy to work and suited to a wide array of uses. Its smooth surface, block shape, variety of thicknesses, distinctive colours and natural durability made Rundle Rock a popular commodity. Now, it is more popular than ever and a favorite among landscapers, architects and masons.

Established in 1960 by George Biggy, Sr., Thunderstone Quarries remained a family-run business for over 40 years. Today, Thunderstone is being operated by a new management team with several years experience in natural stone.

Rundle Rock is a high-quality sedimentary shale that originated as fine-grained, marine siltstone deposited on seabeds 245 million years ago. Ripple marks and fossil traces are common on many Rundle Rock surfaces.
